Here are some samples from the starting point of my ‘attacking’ section of my personal project. I have been working with clay, oxide, wood and plastic, then I have been attacking the clay with water (before firing in the kiln) or with the sand blaster (after firing in the kiln) and layering the wood with …

I managed this week to make a prototype for my mirror of spoons made from 3mm clear acrylic plastic which has been laser cut to hold 40 spoons. Having the prototype has been very helpful to work through my ideas and give me more, this in turn has influenced me in to making a prominent and significant mirror that will be grand in size this would reflect the surrounding area.

In this project my main focus of enquiry is the visual aspects of viruses, bacteria, cells and what they do. I have concentrated on three areas  to begin with; attack, inhibit and divide. This may expand or change as this project progresses.

To start I have been looking at the patterns and colours and recreating them using inks, water and bleach. Some of which have been very successful.

I have decided to make a mirror of spoons. Here are some different ways of layering spoons using the convex and concave surfaces to see how it reflects and which perspective would make the best reflective surface for my mirror; as this will aid me in the design of the final outcome.

What I want to do?

I want to look at Cells, Bacteria, Germs, Pollen and anything that be magnified under a microscope, as my starting point. Looking at the colours, shape and what they do? E.g. how cells and virus’s work, do they attack, attach, inhibit or transform. This will help me determine my outcomes. I will make a series of objects that incorporate my reaction to my findings.

My reasons for this: what have you done in the past, your influences, starting points and contextual references?

I have picked this topic as I have always wanted to do this project for a while, When I was at college one of my cohort got this project and ever since then I have always wanted to see what I can do with this project and where it would take me.  As in past projects I want this project to be extremely visual and stimulating to the audience, using arrange of materials to forces on the visual aspects of the project.

Why the activity is important to me: what I want to achieve through the project, how it fits in with my current work and its future development?

This activity is to help me through my discovery as a designer/maker of objects; I have now come to a point when I have to define my practise for the future. As I am now half way through my degree this is now the time for me to use everything I have learnt since starting this journey and this is the right project for me to bring everything I have gained together.

For the Live Industry Project, IMO will be working with the Holburne Museum in Bath. As a cohort we have been given free rein of what we propose to do at the museum, as a group we have decide that the starting point should be ‘spoon’ as they have a large collection of spoons. The focus of my investigation will be the reflections that spoons can make, because when I looked around the museum the most fascinating part for me was how the objects reflected in the glass giving them a different character.

I went back to the Holburne to take picture of refection in the glass and off a spoon.

Here are a few of my samples alongside some of the final pieces to show how they have influenced my conclusion for 3 dimensional essay . All of my ceramic pieces are made from Earthenware clay, Semi-Porcelain slip, Oxides in the clay/slip and Transparent Glaze. I did this so you could see how the pieces have been made.

When starting the 3 dimensional essay, I had to pick an area or an object to focus my research on. I decided to pick the Rolls Royce Trent engines as I have a fear of flying and have always wondered how a plane manages to remain airborne.

After a while of researching, I realized that the thing I liked the most about the engine was the visual aspect of it especially the fan blades. therefore this is what inspired me for the 3 dimensional essay. The question I asked myself was ‘How does the function or production process of an object effect it’s visual character?’
